Windows 11 is rapidly catching up to Windows 10 in terms of user adoption and is poised to take the lead very soon. According to the latest data from Statcounter, as of June 2025, Windows 11 holds a market share of 47.98%, closing in on Windows 10, which still leads by a narrow margin at 48.76%.
Older versions of the operating system continue to hold small shares: Windows 7 accounts for 2.19% of users, while Windows XP still lingers with 0.43%. Looking at the broader desktop operating system landscape, Microsoft remains dominant. Windows platforms collectively command 70.14% of the desktop OS market. Apple’s macOS follows with a 15.35% share, while Linux holds 4.09% and ChromeOS stands at 1.24%.
Windows 11 is expected to overtake Windows 10 in the coming months. This shift is likely to accelerate as Microsoft plans to end official support for Windows 10 in the fall of 2025. After that point, security updates for Windows 10 will only be available through special channels, making an upgrade to Windows 11 more urgent for many users.
