In the fall of 2025, Microsoft will discontinue free security updates for Windows 10, turning millions of PCs into potential security risks. Experts therefore recommend switching to a newer version soon, as nearly 32 million computers in Germany alone are still running the outdated Windows 10 operating system.

Free updates for Windows 10 will only be available until October 14, 2025. After that, security updates will only be accessible for an additional fee paid to Microsoft. These paid security updates are primarily intended for businesses, so private users should already consider switching to the latest Windows 11 version.

Upgrading to Windows 11 is free for most Windows 10 computers. To initiate the update, simply open the Control Panel and navigate to the Windows Update section. Before upgrading to a new Windows version, it is recommended to back up important data. Documents and photos should therefore be saved on a USB stick, an external hard drive, or a cloud storage service.

If the computer is older, upgrading to Windows 11 may not always be possible. In some cases, enabling the TPM module in the UEFI/BIOS settings might help, but older devices often lack this feature, making a new purchase necessary.

Good office computers with Windows 11 are often relatively affordable and available for under 500 USD. However, those who need a computer for more demanding applications or gaming should look in the price range of 800 USD and above.
